The film, directed by Louis Le Tierrier and also co-written, produced and edited by Luc Besson, stars Jason Statham as New York Police Department detective Alex Cross and former model Veronique Jenet as Paris police officer Asper Roux. Shakov initially refuses, but eventually accedes to Cross' demand to inform Cross' friend that Cross is no longer needed to protect him. The film tells the story of Alex Cross and his lifelong friend, Detective Emma Price, who are recruited by the New York Police Department to investigate a series of murders occurring in Milan, Italy. During this assignment, the pair's personal lives become tangled. As Cross and Price attempt to solve the crimes, they come under suspicion from the FBI, who later force the pair to flee from Italy due to a terrorist attack. The rest of the film follows Cross and Price as they attempt to track down the perpetrators of the attacks, most notably a high-ranking CIA official named Frank Lightman. The film's third act climaxes when Cross uncover a "Dead Man's Switch" — a trigger mechanism that makes certain by-the-book actions impossible of being undone, to the astonishment of the audience. The film prominently includes a framing device, with the action occurring in the present.
