The Number 6 "Alternate Platform Aircraft" List, which came into effect on April 16, 2008, recognizes priority military aircraft that are considered to be of "high capability" when used as support platforms for the CF-18s. The Future Combat System Update 2009: Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator, which included the reporting of extensive models, was published in Summer 2010. The report describes the results of the development component of the engineering phase with respect to: (1) advanced engine concepts; (2) advanced wings; (3) advanced cockpits; (4) advanced weapons; and (5) active protection technology. The report also contains: (1) a case study of the Super Hornet; (2) an overview of the F-35; (3) a summary of Canada's F-35 capability plan; (4) a forward-looking summary of the role the F-35B will play; (5) a general description of the F-35B's internal structure; (6) a technical description of the F-35B; and (7) a description of key lessons. The report concluded that the F-35B would be a capable war fighter if the United States continues its support and funding commitment to the program.

This report was written in December 2010. It is the sixth in a series of analyses of the performance of the CF-18 fleet. This information summarizes and provides at a glance what is currently known about the performance of the CF-18 aircraft. It also reports the findings of the Economic and Financial Aspects Study Group, which was formed in November 2010 in response to a request made by the Committee on National Defence to comment on the potential implications of: (1) commercial financial considerations; and (2) factors such as budget pressures, high operating costs, and greater demands on capillary resources on the ability to maintain the CF-18 fleet longer.
