Ethnobotany has gained an important place in the integrative approach to research on indigenous knowledge in general and on medicinal plant knowledge in particular. However, some phenomena observed in ethnobotanical studies may not be real, but methodological artifacts. In this study we chose rural communities of Northeast Brazil to test a few hypotheses regarding the low representation of ferns and lycophytes, plant groups that together make up about 5% of the Brazilian flora. The first hypothesis proposed that the scarcity of ferns and lycophytes in these communities is due to methodological artifacts. The second hypothesis proposed that local perception of the low therapeutic efficacy of ferns and lycophytes is the cause for the low representation of these groups. The third hypothesis proposed that there is an imbalance between the representation of ferns and lycophytes in local pharmacopoeias and in the Brazilian flora in general. We tested the three hypotheses using two different methods, a questionnaire and floristic surveys. The data obtained were analyzed differently for each hypothesis. All hypotheses were confirmed, showing that all three factors (methods, factors of perception and data resources) contributed to the low representation of these plant groups as medicinal resources.
