This is a good book for the field, although it is possibly a bit too dense for general use. Its brevity and quality make it ideal for the field and for amateur naturalists at home. It is also useful for the study of mammals. There are no plans to produce an edition for non-English speakers, but if they are interested in the birds of Asia, they can consult the companion volume, Birds of South Asia: The Ripley Guide, published by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
In addition to her work on this book, Rasmussen has written Birds of the World (2014), a comprehensive guide to the world's birds, and she also writes the popular David Attenborough's World (2014). She is also now the director of the Bristol Ornithological Society and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, both of which have set up the BirdLife International Partnership , a global conservation and research partnership.
The new guide is packed with information, but it is much more than a field guide. It is a work of applied ornithology. Each colour plate is accompanied by a thorough, detailed, bird description, and a short field identification key. It is written in a very readable style, is clearly and logically presented, and is very helpful for beginners. It is also comprehensive, covering the entire Indian subcontinent.
